Get Your Lashes Wet the Same Day
The single most annoying rule in lash extensions is about to stop applying to you.
You know the one. Fresh set, don’t get them wet for 24 hours. No shower, no steam, no gym, no crying at the thing you were going to cry at anyway. You leave the studio managing your face for a full day.
That rule exists because of chemistry, not tradition — and we’ve changed the chemistry.
Why the 24-hour rule exists
Traditional lash adhesive is cyanoacrylate. It cures using moisture in the air, and it does that slowly — the bond keeps hardening for hours after you walk out. Introduce water, steam, or heat during that window and the adhesive turns cloudy and brittle. That’s shock curing. It’s why some sets start shedding on day three.
So the rule isn’t your artist being precious. It’s a real limitation of the glue.
What we do instead
Our UV-bonded sets use an adhesive that cures under a controlled light source rather than waiting on ambient humidity. The bond sets in under four seconds, right there on the lash.
Which means:
- No 24-hour waiting period. Shower on the way home. Go to the gym. Get caught in the rain.
- Better retention. The bond forms completely rather than partially, so you’re not losing extensions to a half-cured base.
- Less adhesive per lash. Because the cure is instant and controlled, the artist uses a smaller amount. Less glue on the lash line means a cleaner look and a lighter feel.
- Less fume exposure during the appointment. Traditional adhesive off-gasses while it cures — that’s the sting some people get with their eyes closed. Clients who’ve had that reaction before generally do noticeably better with this.
- Fewer weak points. Traditional bonds are affected by the humidity in the room that day. August in Brooklyn and January in Brooklyn are different environments for glue. UV curing removes that variable.
What we won’t tell you
We won’t tell you it’s hypoallergenic. The adhesive still contains acrylates, just less of it, and anyone can develop a sensitivity to anything. If you’ve had a reaction to lash adhesive before, tell us and we’ll patch test you first — with any adhesive, ours included.
We won’t tell you it makes retention permanent. Extensions shed when your natural lash sheds. That’s a lash cycle, not a bonding problem, and no technology changes it.
Is the light safe?
It’s a low-output curing light, held away from the eye, for a few seconds per section. Your eyes are closed and covered with under-eye pads for the entire service, as they are in any lash appointment.
For what it’s worth: Finland’s national radiation authority (STUK) assessed UV curing devices used in lash application and found no significant radiation risk when used as directed. It’s a fraction of the exposure of a gel manicure lamp, and far less than standing outside on Avenue U in July.
If you’re on a photosensitizing medication — certain antibiotics, isotretinoin, some acne treatments — mention it. We’ll use traditional adhesive for you instead. That’s an easy switch.
Who this is best for
- Anyone who works out, swims, or takes hot showers and is tired of scheduling around a glue rule
- Clients who’ve had watering, stinging, or a burning feeling during past lash appointments
- Anyone whose retention has been disappointing and has already ruled out oily skincare and sleeping face-down
- Clients getting a set the day before an event, where there’s no time to wait out a cure
